Denotations and Connotations

The denotations in this poster are the facial expressions, the colours used and the boldness and font of the writing.

The colours that we can see are black, white and red. These are the denotations.

The connotations of these are that the colour white connotes innocence, these people are innocent in all of this and possibly do not deserve what will happen to them. The colour red connotes blood, and danger, indicating that these people are in some sort of danger and they could be in some trouble. The colour black connotes death. This implies that they may be about to die and are in some serious danger. The black and white in the background of the woman's face suggests that she could be fading away and has died in the past.

The facial expressions we see are the shock of the woman in the background, she seems very surprised and the audience are able to understand that she may be in some danger.

Also, the boldness of the title suggests that this is the most important part, what the creators want the audience. The name of it "Scream" indicates that it is a horror film.

The audience are only able to presume these connotations due to them being familiar, many people can associate some of these denotations and agree with the meaning.

The Call of Duty Black Ops II cover is mainly filled with the colour black. The blackness leaves a sense of mystery, providing the customers with very little information, other than the fact it continues from Black Ops II. There is also a sense of mystery through the fact you cannot see the face of they mysterious man on the cover. All we see is the fact he is holding a gun and is and intimidating man who clearly holds great power.

The denotations are the colour black, the man and the gun. The connotations are what we as viewers make from this and believe that the gun is a threatening weapon, suggesting the man is a killer and the blackness suggests death, brought to the victims by the man on the front holding the gun.
