Denotations and Connotations

Image
The denotations in this poster are the facial expressions, the colours used and the boldness and font of the writing. The colours that we can see are black, white and red. These are the denotations. The connotations of these are that the colour white connotes innocence, these people are innocent in all of this and possibly do not deserve what will happen to them. The colour red connotes blood, and danger, indicating that these people are in some sort of danger and they could be in some trouble. The colour black connotes death. This implies that they may be about to die and are in some serious danger. The black and white in the background of the woman's face suggests that she could be fading away and has died in the past. The facial expressions we see are the shock of the woman in the background, she seems very surprised and the audience are able to understand that she may be in some danger. Also, the boldness of the title suggests that this is the most importan...

Representations in Music Videos

Image
This music video by Nikki Minaj reinforces the stereotype of women being "sex objects". In this video, the girls are barely clothed and she is dancing about,  almost naked and sexually for male viewers to get sexual attraction from it. This agrees with the "Male Gaze" theory, due to how little clothes the girls are wearing, male viewers will clearly be sexually attracted and view these women as 'objects'. This can be linked to the Cultivation Theory by Gerbner, due to the fact that over time women have grown to become more independent and rather than dressing with long dresses etc, they now dress how they want, even if this means barely clothed. This type of music video is a performance one, the girls are dancing while singing and it agrees with the male gaze theory. The type of video that "Love The Way You Lie"  is is a story music video, as the song is sang by Eminem and Rhianna as the video showed is a couple going through w...

Representations in Eastenders

Image
In this clip, a typical stereotype is used of a bald man being portrayed as violent and aggressive. The clip reinforces the stereotype of bald men being "Meatheads" as Phil Mitchell is presented this way. As well as this, the modern perspective of some East end Londoners are stereotyped as being violent, aggressive and typically angry people. This is presented this way as Phil Mitchell is shown in a pub, clearly under the influence of alcohol. The media are reinforcing this stereotype by gatekeeping and allowing this to be shown, rather than seeing Phil Mitchell enjoying a nice meal with his family etc, instead he is represented as a "typical Brit". The stereotype has been exaggerated, as obviously all bald east end London men are not violent and aggressive. The stereotype has been exaggerated to relate to the audience, as they can understand due to the stereotypes being relatively common.  Elsewhere in the media, bald men are presented as aggres...

Construction of Representations in News

Rohingya Fire The quote on Time.com above communicates with the readers, as the use of descriptive writing such as "fear" and "fleeing" indicates that the civilians were panicking and scared, they were rushing away in disaster. http://time.com/4922715/myanmar-rohingya-violence-rakhine/ The Rohingya Fire was a fire that occurred in Myanmar, this caused many Rohingya refugees to flee Myanmar, and end up at Bangladesh. The fire caused devastation as 270,000 refugees fled the village. This story has been constructed, as out of all the news stories that could possibly be used, the fire was chosen as it is interesting to the audience as it is a disaster that has been introduced worldwide. The online newspaper above is constructing the story also, the use of descriptive writing persuades the reader to read this particular story as it is creative and gives the reader a chance of imagination, easily able to picture the travesty of the fire th...
