Representations in Eastenders

In this clip, a typical stereotype is used of a bald man being portrayed as violent and aggressive. The clip reinforces the stereotype of bald men being "Meatheads" as Phil Mitchell is presented this way.
As well as this, the modern perspective of some East end Londoners are stereotyped as being violent, aggressive and typically angry people. This is presented this way as Phil Mitchell is shown in a pub, clearly under the influence of alcohol. The media are reinforcing this stereotype by gatekeeping and allowing this to be shown, rather than seeing Phil Mitchell enjoying a nice meal with his family etc, instead he is represented as a "typical Brit". The stereotype has been exaggerated, as obviously all bald east end London men are not violent and aggressive. The stereotype has been exaggerated to relate to the audience, as they can understand due to the stereotypes being relatively common.
Elsewhere in the media, bald men are presented as aggressive such as in fast and furious as Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, and Vin Diesel (Mark Sinclair) are bald men, they are portrayed as very violent men in the films and are aggressive throughout.

Also in Eastenders, a stereotype is challenged. The stereotype of women being housewives is challenged as Shirley Carter is out of the house working. She is working at a takeaway. However, the fact that she does work at a takeaway reinforces the stereotype of women doing menial jobs. The character of Shirley Carter also challenges the stereotype of women being weak and not able to fight for themselves. As the two men in the restaurant (Jake and Rowly) begin to torment her she does not accept it and remain vulnerable like the stereotype would suggest, instead she stands up for herself and pours coke over the heads of the men who tried tried to steal from her when she worked in the shop. Shirley emasculates the men here, becoming the dominant person and she makes the men feel weak and vulnerable. Also at the beginning of the clip, instead of shying off and letting the men walk out of the stop with the beers, she stands her ground and clearly points out that there is a CCTV camera, challenging the stereotype of women being weak as instead she shows dominance. Shirley's appearance is quite rough, reinforcing the stereotype of Londoner's being "common".

Elsewhere in the media, the stereotype of women being weak and vulnerable are reinforced as we hear several stories of women being raped, and how the male are the dominant gender. However, there are also instances that challenge the stereotype such as independent women, forming business' and taking care of themselves.

  1. Good detail Connor, you have explained these representations well and demonstrated that you have good understanding of the way stereotypes are used in the media.

WWW- well written and clear understanding of how stereotypes are found in the media and how they are used in this genre of TV.

EBI- you had found some examples of media representations elsewhere which you could use to support these stereotypes and further demonstrate them, i.e in news coverage.

Show me- reply to this post and give some further examples of these representations in the media
