Regulation Questions
Q1) Why is regulation of the media important? Give examples of what might happen without regulation.
Media regulation is the control or guidance of mass media by governments and other bodies. It is very important as it helps prevent anything disturbing, unnecessary and anything that can be harmful to viewers from being released to the public. It helps to protect the viewers, and anybody involved. Media regulation can help prevent people from being wrongly accused by false accusations, by preventing newspapers and other platforms from producing false information. Newspapers often use bias in their headlines, therefore the use of media regulation can provide a much more neutral response from the public.

2) How was newspaper regulation as shown in the docudrama "The last Honour of Christopher Jeffries" ineffective.
The newspaper regulation that was used in "The last Honour of Christopher Jeffries" was very ineffective, as the newspapers within the docudrama provided false information, falsely accusing an innocent man of Christopher Jeffries for the murder of Johanna Yates. The accusations that were used affected his life as he was not only accused of murder, he was called a "weirdo" and the newspapers mislead the public to believe him to be some sort of paedophile. Even after Christopher was let out of prison he was still facing harsh comments from the public who believed the false accusations that were spread throughout several newspapers. Therefore the newspaper regulations did not do enough to prevent the wrong accusing of Christopher Jeffries.
3) The IPSO website states "The press whilst free to be partisan, must distinguish between comment, conjecture and facts" this means that the press are allowed to have their opinion, however they must be able to have the facts to back up their statements that are released within the newspapers. For example if they are taken to court for possibly using wrong accusations they must be able to prove that the statements within their newspapers are facts.
4) It is important for the press to have a code of practice because it can prevent innocent peoples lives from being ruined. As we have seen in the Christopher Jeffries it is very much possible for the newspapers to release false news and affect the life of the person accused. Having a code of practice can prevent harsh comments and criticisms within society and make in general accusations much smoother. Making sure the press can provide facts with their accusations is crucial to make sure anyone involved with accusations are not affected by society and discrimination against them.
